“I Want It That Way” is about a strained connection. The lyrical interpretation of this song, but, is notoriously muddled. They don’t necessarily make sense—and also this is the topic of a lot the online conversation around this song. The lyrics were written by Max Martin and Andreas Carlschild, veteran Swedish hitmakers that started their careers at Cheiron Studios, which was mostly responsible for the sound of pop in the ’90s. Carlskid talked to HitQuarters about creating this song:

‘I Want It That Way’ was a play with words. When Max came up with the original concept for the song, it currently had the line ‘you are my fire, the one desire.’ We tried a million different variations on the second verse, and lastly we had actually to go ago to what was sounding so excellent, ‘you are my fire, the one desire.’ And then we adjusted it to ‘am I your fire, your one desire,’ which made absolutely no feeling in combination through the chorus – but everybody loved it!

The song’s guitar riff was influenced by Metallica. Tbelow was an different version of the song recorded via even more meaningful lyrics, however the band also desired the original variation of the song. Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardchild shelp that Martin’s English language skills were worse then, which is why the song’s lyrics don’t make a ton of sense. He told LA Weekly:

Ultimately the song really doesn’t really make much sense.

The video for this song, which was paropassed away by Blink-182, won a VMA for “Viewer’s Choice.”

It was nominated for 3 Grammys in 2000: “Tune of the Year,” “Record of the Year,” and also “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group through Vocals.”

On August 19, 2011, China’s Ministry of Culture released a list of 100 songs, including this song, that were compelled to be rerelocated from the Internet as they had actually been released without being based on a mandatory screening process carried out by Ministry officials.
