🔆Underlying Causes of Tightness🔆
🔹If your muscle is too short to meet its functional requirements, then by all means stretch. If stretching helps relieve some of the tension and makes you feel good, then by all means stretch! In the meantime, lets also figure out if there’s a different root cause of that tightness and then address it. For example:
1️⃣Strength and endurance deficits in a muscle can lead to tightness. When a muscle is overloaded, it tightens up. This doesn’t just mean in the weight room or during activity, but when you hold yourself in one position for a long time (like at the office), certain muscles have to keep you in that position. If they don’t have enough endurance, they become overloaded and tight. The key here is incremental strengthening and movement.
2️⃣Stress leads to increased tension in your muscles and being “stuck” in a position (“I hold my stress in my shoulders”,). We have reflexive positions to stress that we don’t even realize. Being stuck in the same position leads to the muscle becoming overtaxed and overworked and caused pain and tightness. These lead to more stress which leads to more tightness. Vicious circle. The key is awareness and daily stress relief techniques.
🔶If you constantly find yourself w/ “tightness”, then you have to address the true underlying cause(s).
