local Images and Videos on Instagram
I wanted to see for myself how it was going to be like when the train arrived at 0830, gradually pulling into Maeklong Railway station. When the train inched slowly on the tracks, the stall owners brought down the tarpaulin awnings from above and withdrew their baskets on their storefronts temporarily. I wonder if the locals liked having hordes of tourists around on a daily basis. How does it feel having tourists come by only to take pictures and videos of the scenes of vendors in action, selfies that people can “prove they are in the busyness of the market” and not actually interested in buying anything?
There was hardly any space for walking. The train tracks were so narrow and people were going back and forth, jostling for space and for wanting to obtain the best picture or video at whatever possible angle. There were dishes and trays of salted fish laid out, catfishes beheaded, dried goods and spices contained in sacks and platters of fruits and plastic baskets of vegetables for sale.
I was frustrated with myself for being part of the tourist crowd. Did I not know that these actions will affect the locals in the smallest of ways? Are they used to it or do they have to learn to become used to the massive influx of tourists every day?
