Bunnies nails need to be trimmed regularly.
If not they will have sharp needle like claws that they can get caught in stuff and in a panic they can rip out their nails making them bleed everywhere.
Learning to do it yourself at home is way easier and less stressful on your bunny than taking them somewhere to have it done.
Learning to clip nails:
1. Nail clippers. Unfortunately the nail clippers that you use on yourself don’t work on bunnies because they have round nails not flat. So you will need to get small animal nail clippers (5th picture). 2. How to clip nails. If you look at the pictures I have provided (2nd picture) you will see that on the bunnies nail their is a red or pink part. That is called the Kwik. The kwik is basically a vain that supplies blood to the nails. Your goal is not hit the kwik but to clip the white part next to the kwik (see 2nd picture). 3. How to clip black nails. It’s the same as clipping white colored ones except you have to be carful not to hit the kwik. As on some bunnies you can’t see where the kwik ends. A trick I use to ensure I don’t hit anything is to use a flashlight underneath the nail (4th picture). 4. Good things to have on hand.
1. Cornstarch. Helps stop bleeding if you accidentally hit the kwik.
2. Flashlight. To help see kwik on black nails. 3. Extra pair of nail clippers.
4. Nail file. I like to use them on babies when their nails are so sharp to to small to cut.
Methods of getting your rabbit to hold still wile clippings nails.
Their is many different ways to get your bunny to hold still wile clippings nails. Such as flipping them on their back, bunny burrito, someone holds the bunny securely facing away from them wile another person does nails or letting the bunny sit on the ground wile you lift up each paw. Once you figure out which position works best for you and your bunny the nail clipping will become easier.
