Milk Makeup Sunshine Oil ($38) is a new all over facial and body oil that comes housed in a rather chic, portable rollerball pen which makes it not only mess-free but handy for travel. I love facial oils as much as the next girl or guy and I have drier skin so I fit right into the hydration demographic for a product like this type of product.

I loved packaging on this so I decided to give it a try.

Milk Makeup Sunshine Oil comes in a see through plastic click pen that has an attached rollerball at the end. At a glance I thought it would be quite a great packaging due to the fact that you could easily roll on the oil anywhere you needed it. This seemed particularly great for under eyes. However, after careful consideration I thought it would begin to get messy and possible leak-y.

I very happy to report though this is in fact designed in a way that it is completely and utterly mess-free even when stored upside down. The click pen actually has a small closure which opens and closes with each click to release a very tiny amount of oil into the rollerball area for application. This means you won’t have a constant flow of oil to the rollerball area which means no mess. Typically one or two clicks will all you need to do your face and under your eyes in my experience with the product. After that, a majority of the oil is drained from the small reserve and won’t refill until your next click. Milk obviously spent a little time thinking about the packaging. I have rollerballs like this with both facial oil and fragrance but they tend to keep filling with oil or fragrance even when I’m not using it. Typically this means the surrounding edges and cap ends up messy and oily. Not the case with this click pen as it remains completely mess-free which in turn means it travels very, very well without creasing a mess.

It does contain a mix of different essential oils which may or may not be irritating to your skin. Personally I was fine with them but just keep in mind that some essentials oils aren’t always agreeable to every skin type. This oil contains a blend of grapeseed, avocado, grapefruit peel, tangerine peel, mandarin, and lemon peel. The formula is vegan according to Milk Makeup. It does have a bright, citrus-y fragrance which I found pleasant but sensitive users might not enjoy. The amount of citrus oils does concern me as many are photosensitizers and aren’t great for wearing outside as they can make skin sensitive to sunlight.

I thought the oil quite hydrating and felt it absorbed very easily without leaving me greasy or shiny. I particularly loved how easily I was able to apply it under my eyes, just roll it on, pat it into place, done! It’s ideal for use under concealer especially on my drier, finely lined eyes. I don’t typically wear facial oil in the day, as you likely know already from reading my Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil Review, but I felt quite fine with the Sunshine Oil formula. Maybe because I had a little more control over the amount I was using or maybe it’s just a lighter oil but it worked very well under makeup and left my skin quite soft and nicely hydrated. But the formula didn’t prove too heavy and I felt uncomfortable using it in the day. But as I mentioned above the oil might be best suited to using inside.

I wish the formula had a different range of oils used as I do worry about the amount of citrus ones in this blend. I also wish the product was a little cheaper. It’s $38 for 0.5 oz of product and for $10 more you can get Josie Maran’s Argan Oil at 1.7 oz in size which is considerably bigger.

Milk Makeup Sunshine Oil has some great packaging and I liked the light, quick to absorb formula but I think it is a tad expensive for a blend of essential oils. I also find the quick absorbing formula a bit wasteful if I can’t enjoy it outside of the house because as I said above I worry about the amount of citrus oils in the blend!

Great idea, great packaging, but perhaps in the future they might do a blend that is suitable for use outside and maybe make it a smidge cheaper.
